Are You Ready for LION?

Lion, the next version of Mac OS X (10.7 for those keeping track), is due out any day now which will force some of us to consider the implications.  While we at Blueline Computer understand the need to be on the cutting edge, we strongly advise not upgrading any business machine that could potentially leave you unable to work if the upgrade does not go according to plan.  That said, when it is time to upgrade, there are some key aspects to remember.  Here is a short list:

Research:  This is simply fact checking.  Be sure your hardware will support Lion!  The basics are:  min 2 GB RAM & provided you bought your Mac in the fall of 2006 or later, you probably have one of the necessary processors.  On the software side, check that your applications are compatible.  There is one big thing to watch out for - Lion will not run Rosetta.  This removes the ability to run applications coded for the PowerPC chip that older Macs used.  This is not really that big of a deal, until you find out the printer you bought last year still uses software written for PowerPC and it will no longer run properly.

Backup:  While we are sure all of you backup on a regular basis, the upgrade gives you a great reminder to make sure your backup is functioning as expected.  Further, you may wish to add a special type of backup called a clone.  This type of backup is an exact duplicate (clone) of your system drive.  It is bootable and in an emergency you can use it to go back a step after your upgrade—a very nice option if your backup leaves you in a non-working state.

Upgrade Planning:  Plan your upgrade for a time when you will not have critical needs for your computer—possibly on the weekend.  Be certain to complete a backup as noted above.  If anything doesn’t work as expected, you can always go back to Snow Leopard from your clone.
